我为何而活

我此生,，为三种纯朴却无比激越的情感所主宰：渴望爱情，求索知识，悲悯我辈无穷尽之苦难。此三情，如来去不定之疾风，携卷我踏上遥远的路途，于深水苦海中泅渡，抵达木枯花凋的彼岸。
我愿爱，因爱能予我欢乐。此感这般真实不朽，以至于我甘愿为了片刻欢愉而割舍余生。
我寻爱，因爱能化解孤独。毋庸讳言，孤独已让灵魂悸怖，我因此望见冰冷死寂的无底深渊。那是一切的尽头，世界之端。
我欲爱，因在爱之交合中，在神秘而真实的暗涌下，我见到了先贤们曾想象、预见过的天堂，如此妙然无语，明澈不休。
此乃我所求。然对凡人来说，不过虚妄一场，而我已得到。
我以等同于爱之至情来求索知识、寻觅真理。我欲窥探星辰闪烁之秘密。也曾试图接近毕达哥拉斯，以求感受其仅靠数字便执掌世间诸法的力量。我在这种力量面前，把控了独当一面的技艺，可惜流光容易把人抛，因而并未天下无敌。
爱欲欢愉与自由之真理带我辈直上青云之巅。
然温柔之心又使我堕入尘世。只因世人那悲戚的呼号在我心中久久回荡。
那些被恶魔封印的幼子，被不幸禁锢的女人，被子女虚假之亲睦蒙蔽的老人，以及那一生如影随形的孤单、贫乏与痛苦，无不时刻讽刺着我辈本该拥有的生活。
我企望能亲手了却此类人间邪恶，却已力不从心。因我亦正遭受着他们的折磨——虚伪、踌躇、淡漠，以及更多。
俱往矣。
如今我垂垂老矣时回顾此生种种，可谓悲喜交集。而我依然确信，短短一生所走过的，是如此值得。
如若有未知之力量愿恩宠于我，许我再次降临，那么我愿用此生最真的心，看尽来世最好的风景。
What I have lived for

Three passions, simple but overwhelmingly strong, have governed my life: the longing for love, the search for knowledge, and unbearable pity for the suffering of mankind. These passions, like great winds, have blown me hither and thither, in a wayward course, over a great ocean of anguish, reaching to the very verge of despair.
I have sought love, first, because it brings ecstasy - ecstasy so great that I would often have sacrificed all the rest of life for a few hours of this joy. I have sought it, next, because it relieves loneliness--that terrible loneliness in which one shivering consciousness looks over the rim of the world into the cold unfathomable lifeless abyss. I have sought it finally, because in the union of love I have seen, in a mystic miniature, the prefiguring vision of the heaven that saints and poets have imagined. This is what I sought, and though it might seem too good for human life, this is what--at last--I have found.
With equal passion I have sought knowledge. I have wished to understand the hearts of men. I have wished to know why the stars shine. And I have tried to apprehend the Pythagorean power by which number holds sway above the flux. A little of this, but not much, I have achieved.
Love and knowledge, so far as they were possible, led upward toward the heavens. But always pity brought me back to earth. Echoes of cries of pain reverberate in my heart. Children in famine, victims tortured by oppressors, helpless old people a burden to their sons, and the whole world of loneliness, poverty, and pain make a mockery of what human life should be. I long to alleviate this evil, but I cannot, and I too suffer.
This has been my life. I have found it worth living, and would gladly live it again if the chance were offered me.
