Hawking, the physicist who achieved a fluky sort of pop culture fame in the late '80s as the bard of black holes, suffers from a debilitating motor-neuron disease similar to ALS that has confined him to a wheelchair for most of his adult life. But in the movie we are introduced to him before his affliction takes hold, when he's just an awkwardly charming Ph.D. student at Cambridge in the 1960s, with a mischievous smile, a mop of ginger hair, and nerdy Buddy Holly glasses. At a mixer, he meets and falls in love with a radiant poetry student named Jane (Felicity Jones). Then darkness falls, quickly and pitilessly.

The cruelest irony is that at the very moment when Hawking's mind was exploding with radically expansive new ideas, his physical world was collapsing in on him. But he and Jane refuse to let the disease derail their life, and he remains steadfast in his pursuit of a theory about the universe that will alter the course of science. Though the film is conventionally structured and bathed in a for-your-consideration sheen, Redmayne's astonishing transformation lends a touch of magic to the material. Even when he's in a wheelchair, his torso twisted, his limbs gnarled, and his ability to speak severely limited, the actor conveys Hawking's genius and humanity (not to mention his crackling wit). It's like watching an escape artist who's bound and gagged break free from a straitjacket. What Redmayne does is breathtaking—and it never feels like aperformance. In a much less showy role, Jones does her own heartbreaking work as the woman who dedicated her life to loving and caring for Hawking. With nuance and grace, she summons the pain and frustration that were by-products of that commitment.

And yet I couldn't help wishing that The Theory of Everything had more theory. Hawking famously excels at explaining complicated thoughts with layman simplicity, but the film never translates the originality and depth of his ideas—or even what they are. Marsh asks us to buy the beauty of Hawking's mind on faith. He's lucky he's got Redmayne to do his selling.

Chinese TV series well-received in Tanzania

President Xi Jinping especially pointed out in his speech at the Julius Nyerere International Convention Center in Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania on March 25, how popular Chinese TV series "The Beautiful Daughter-in-Law Era" had made the Tanzania audience aware of the lives of Chinese modern couples。

The well-known Chinese TV series was first aired in Shanghai in November of 2009. It was first dubbed in Swahili and broadcast across East African countries in 2011. Kenyan actress Josephine Moeni Waweru and actor Khamis Juma Swaleh were chosen to take on the voice dubbing for the leading roles in the African version of the series. It plays a vital role between China and African countries in understanding each other’s cultures。

Revolving around urban families, the 36-episode light comedy focuses on marital issues and the new attitude adopted by the post-1980 generation. The show tells the story of three women, who encounter various predicaments before tying the knot. Their relationships with their mothers-in-law aren't smooth and their attempts to please the parents spark hilarious and sometimes bitter confrontations, which reflect the prevalent marital problems in today's society。

Wang Liping, screenwriter of the TV series, said she had her doubts as to whether African audiences would be able to connect with the show. To her great relief, however, it has proven a success in Africa. "The overseas market is eager to know young Chinese people's state of mind in modern times," Wang said。

Liu Dong, cultural counselor of the Chinese embassy in Tanzania, said the series was a huge success. "Now in Tanzania, Doudou, the name of the lead character, has become a synonym for Chinese daughters-in-law. Whenever Chinese girls are mentioned in a conversation, local people refer to them as 'doudou.' We have received very positive feedback from the local audience." Liu Dong said the show reflects the real lives of contemporary Chinese people and truly resonates with local audiences。

It still has a long way to go before reaching the 1.26 billion yuan earned by “Lost in Thailand,” but the Hollywood Reporter predicted this week that “Journey to the West” would soon march past “Lost in Thailand” to become China’s highest-earning domestically produced movie.

“Journey to the West” is the creation of director-writer Stephen Chow, best known for “Shaolin Soccer,” “Kung Fu Hustle” and dozens of other hits. (Mr. Chow, a popular comedic actor, doesn’t appear in “Journey to the West.”) The 3-D movie, based on the classic Ming Dynasty-era novel “Journey to the West,” follows the adventures of a young demon-catcher. Audiences have responded enthusiastically to Mr. Chow’s potent mix of action, comedy, terror, romance, and a trio of popular stars: Shu Qi, Wen Zhang and Huang Bo.

The movie has already set some records. Its opening-day take was 81.7 million yuan, breaking the 70-million-yuan record of “Painted Skin: The Resurrection” for a domestic movie. The Hollywood blockbuster “Transformers: Dark of the Moon” remains the opening-day champ with 102 million yuan. But last week “Journey to the West” claimed the title of largest single-day gross (on Feb. 14) of 123 million yuan for all films ─ domestic and foreign ─ surpassing the previous one-day record of 114 million yuan set in 2011 for the third installment of the “Transformers” franchise.

It has now slipped to fourth, overtaken by “Journey to the West” and the December releases of “Lost in Thailand” ─ the only Chinese movie to earn more than a billion yuan at the domestic box office and Jackie Chan’s “CZ12,” an action-comedy that he directed, wrote and stars in; it earned 879 million yuan, according to EntGroup. (“Avatar” still holds the record for the top-grossing movie ever in China at roughly 1.4 billion yuan, but that title looks increasingly vulnerable.)
